Mr. Demirtaş was born on 10 April 1973 in Palu. He graduated from Law School at Ankara University and eventually became President of the Human Rights Association of Diyarbakir Branch.He is also member of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey and the Turkish branch of Amnesty International.Demirtaş was elected Diyarbakir MP as independent candidate in the general elections on 22 July 2007 and joined the DTP Assembly Group.After the closure decision for DTP by the Constitution Court of Turkey, Mr. Demirtaş and the group members joined the Peace and Democracy Party (Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi or BDP) in January 2010.Mr. Demirtaş elected as Co-chair of BDP with Ms. Gültan Kışanak by the 1st Extraordinary Congress of BDP on 2February 2010. Mr. Demirtaş re-elected as MP from Hakkari Region after the General Elections on 12 June 2011.Demirtaş strongly pushed for linguistic and cultural civil disobedience. He asked Kurdish artists to produce works in Kurdish. He requested that teachers and doctors in predominantly Kurdish areas use Kurdish in the course of their jobs. He suggested university students should engage in stronger campaigns for education in mother tongue.
